Appearance: Ms. Winry Rockbell measures about 5’4”, and she has long golden blonde hair and striking blue eyes. Her usual style of choice is dependent on whether she is performing her tasks as an automail mechanic or not. When she is working, she normally wears a pair of cargo pants and a black strapless midriff-revealing “shirt” that is actually more like a bra. She dresses this way so as not to be hindered by loose clothes or other articles that would hang her up and stop her progress. But when she is not hard at work, Winry dons feminine-styled dresses and sometimes a wide brimmed hat to shade her eyes from the sun.
She does not normally wear jewelry, except for the piercings in her ears: four in her right and two in her left. Winry almost always has a wide smile on her face, a smile large enough to immediately cheer a person up. And, although she is mostly a tomboy, Winry does not hide her emotions. She is excitable (especially when automail is being discussed), a bit loud, and without question equipped with a large amount of hyperactivity.
In summary, Winry Rockbell is a pretty girl with a vibrant and outgoing personality to match her looks.

Personality: Winry Rockbell is, at first glance, easily characterized. She is independent, headstrong, and much more interested in mechanics and automail than she is in clothes or jewelry. But beneath that hard exterior, Winry does have a soft spot, and that is the brothers, Edward and Alphonse Elric. She is their friend and almost-sister, and takes care of Ed’s automail whenever he needs it. Loyal to them above anything else, Winry’s top priority is their wellbeing; she constantly worries over them, and usually demands that they take care of each other and not do anything foolish. Although she is usually busy helping her grandmother with their automail business, she sometimes takes the time to travel with Ed and Al. However, the majority of the time, she stays at home waiting for them to return when they are in need of help.

But, Winry is not the type to simply wait around day after day, letting life go by her while she awaits Ed and Al’s return. She helps out Pinako with their business, and also goes about encouraging her own dreams and making them flourish. Her ambitions are just as important to her as her friends are, and she is determined to see them fulfilled, regardless of any obstacles that may show up.

Her independent side shows itself in her no-nonsense reactions to people who are either being foolish or unthinking (or even both). When confronted with those type of people (usually Ed, but sometimes Al), Winry won’t hesitate to start shouting or to even hit them with the wrench that she always carries on her person. Winry’s weaknesses are her desire to make perfect automail; her occasional slip-ups that result in problems later (i.e. forgetting to add a screw to Ed’s automail arm); and her emotional side that surfaces at certain points. But she has good reason to turn emotional, given the situation that she has found herself in. It isn’t easy, taking care of and being a friend to Edward and Alphonse.

Finally, Winry is a sweet and caring girl who loves her friends and her automail, who also happens to have some growing up to do. The good thing about her challenging circumstances is that they will help make Winry stronger and lead her on the road to being a capable adult.

Abilities/Strengths: Winry is a skilled mechanic in her home town of Risembool, where she began working as an assistant to her grandmother, Pinako Rockbell. Over time, Winry took over the majority of the business, fixing people’s automail (mechanical prosthetics that attach directly to the user’s nerves). But, her first project and perhaps her greatest success was the construction of Edward Elric’s automail arm and leg. And, whenever Edward’s automail experiences damage or malfunction, Winry is always ready to perform the necessary repairs to restore it to working order.

Her abilities increased during her time in Rush Valley, where, under the tutelage of Garfiel, she learned new techniques, such as how to fortify automail for use in areas with colder climates.

As for her strengths, she is proficient with automail-building and other forms of repair. In terms of her personality, Winry Rockbell is intensely loyal and supportive, particularly when it comes to her childhood friends Edward and Alphonse Elric. Getting to know people comes easily to Winry, which is an advantage to her, in that she has people to fall back on when in trouble or difficulty.

Weaknesses: Although Edward and Alphonse are Winry’s closest friends and a key reason for her being as strong as she is, they are also her biggest weakness. Winry is slightly insecure, and being friends with Edward and Alphonse only magnifies that insecurity. She constantly worries about their well-being, and when they appear preoccupied or distracted, her worries only increase. Because the two of them do not want to burden others, they never reveal their problems until after some consequence has occurred; this is what causes Winry the most anger and hurt, because she feels that, as their closest friend, they should confide in her when they are in danger and not after the fact.

But whenever Winry is hurt, she goes about siphoning that hurt off via angry and reckless actions (most often involving her ever-present wrench and excellent aim). She is also guilty of concealing her real feelings behind a show of fake strength and occasional outbursts of anger.

Notable Possessions: Winry is usually seen carrying a wrench around with her, which she uses for her work with mechanics, and also for an effective tool for punishment when the Elric brothers do something foolish.

History: Winry Rockbell was born and raised in Risembool, located in the country of Amestris. She was raised by Pinako Rockbell, and her closest friends were two boys, Edward and Alphonse Elric. Winry, Ed, and Al had a fairly happy life, until the Elric brothers’ mother died from an illness and Winry’s parents, who were both doctors, went off to the front lines to lend their medical expertise during the civil war in Ishbal. Unfortunately, they were killed, leaving Winry orphaned and under the care of Pinako.

Since Pinako was an automail expert, she passed on everything she knew to Winry, and as time went by and Winry learned more, she became an expert herself, despite her young age. When Ed and Al transmuted their mother, causing Ed to lose his arm and leg, and Al’s soul to be bound to a suit of armor, Winry was able to put to use the things she’d learned. She and Pinako fitted Ed with an automail arm and leg, and together, they took over joint responsibility for keeping Ed’s automail in good condition. But as Winry grew more confident in her abilities, she became completely responsible for maintaining and repairing Ed’s automail; she eventually came to view Ed as being her finest work.

Because of her association with the Elric brothers, Winry has often found herself in dangerous situations. For instance, she is used by those less-than-friendly to Ed and Al’s cause as some sort of leverage. The head of the State Military, Fuhrer King Bradley, as well as some of the Homunculi (i.e. Envy) use her as a means of getting closer to the Elrics.

Regardless of the danger she might be in, Winry, with her stubborn and determined streak fills the role of friend and sister, as well as the person who keeps Ed and Al in line, thanks to her blunt and fearless way of speaking and the ever-present wrench that she carries.
